The Yoko Casionos

I absolutely love the music of this band! I picked up their CD "These Are The New Old Times" and I've listened to it at least 50 times this week. In my opinion, this is the best Canadian record since The Hip's "World Container" and Metric's "Live It Out".

Visit The Yoko Casionos website for more info.

The 6ixty 8ights

The 6ixty 8ights are a cool local band (from Barrie, I think?). I timed this photo just right, as their bassist's string had just broken and he yanked it off in frustration. It didn't slow them down though, as a quick thinking member of The Golden Dogs jumped onstage, grabbed one of their bass guitars and handed it over.

The Golden Dogs

A great band from here in Canada that has a very bright future ahead of them. Their live show is not to be missed! Visit The Golden Dogs website for more info.

Boxing Day Blader

Although many residents are not happy with the lack of snow in the region, there are some people who don't seem to mind. Those like Kari Williams, who makes good use of a snow-free Kempenfelt Drive, along the lakeshore, on Boxing Day.

Rustic Motif

I shot a local band named Rustic Motif for an upcoming story in the Barrie Examiner newspaper. They were practicing in the basement of an old century home. It was dark and gritty down there, which made for a great atmosphere to capture them in. They are opening for The Trews on News Years Eve at city hall here in Barrie.

Jeff Martin and Ritesh Das

I shot this series at the Foundation Night Club here in Barrie. Jeff is the former lead singer of The Tea Party. He has a great new solo album out called Exile and the Kingdom. It was great to have an opportunity to shoot his show. I only found out about the concert about an hour beforehand. It would have been very disappointing if I had missed it as Jeff now lives in Ireland and he probably won't be in this area again for several years.

Thursday Night Lights

The Barrie Examiner newspaper that I freelance for sponsored and hosted a weekly night-time football game for several weeks. I covered the final two weeks. It was hard to shoot, but it had great atmosphere and was fun. It was a big success for the paper.

The shot on the left was published in the Barrie Examiner.

Scared

I took this the other night at Park Place in Barrie. It was a haunted forest tour. This girl was about 13 or so. She was genuinely terrified and ended up crying. There was over 100 volunteers that dressed up and hid along the forest trail and jumped out at people. It sounds kinda lame, but it was actually a lot of fun when it got dark. Maybe I'll be one of the volunteers next year. This is the tours 9th year and is a fundraiser for a local charity.

This shot was on the front page of the Barrie Examiner.

Distractions

Some kids just don't have any interest in church. I shot this while on assignment. I was waiting to photograph a guest speaker at the church's 46th anniversary.

Kim Phuc (Vietnam War)

It is considered the "photo of the century". It's the photo of a young Vietnamese girl running naked down a road, her skin on fire from napalm immediately after a US airstrike. The photo changed the way the world looked at the Vietnam War, and later won a Pulitzer Prize. The girl in the photo was Kim Phuc and she visited Barrie to share her story.

She had a very hard life after that photo was taken and became a tool of propaganda for many years. She now lives a life of freedom and resides in Canada.

Silvia and I spoke with her after her speaking engagement. She was very nice. I took some photos for her with various people that I will be giving to her later and she signed a copy of the book about her life that I had with me. It was a special night for me. That famous photo is one of the few that made me want to become a photographer and to become a photojournalist.
